Check Valves

Check Valves

A check valve, also known as a one-way valve or non-return valve, is a mechanical device that allows a fluid (liquid or gas) to flow in only one direction.

Check valves are self-actuating and do not require an external handle, lever, or operator. They operate automatically based on the pressure of the fluid:

  • Forward Flow: When the fluid pressure is sufficient to overcome the spring or weight of the internal mechanism (such as a poppet, ball, or swing gate), the valve opens, allowing flow to pass.

  • Backflow: If the flow stops or reverses, the pressure of the fluid and the force of the spring or gravity push the internal mechanism back against its seat, closing the valve to prevent any reverse flow.

Their primary purpose is to prevent backflow, which can cause damage to pumps, contaminate a fluid, or disrupt the operation of a system. They are widely used in a variety of industries, including plumbing, HVAC, and chemical processing.
